I know Wikipedia is completely ad-free. Are there other examples? Thanks

Government institutions .edu and .gov sites are generally ad free. As with most other form of publication, advertising is what pays the rent for web sites. Paid membership sites may be another way to avoid advertising that the free sites need to survive.
