Advertising revenue is the main way web sites earn revenue, they might average something like 1 cent per visitor.

Those who create a quality online publication can develop a readership similar to a newspaper, businesses pay to place ads on the sites most commonly at a per impression rate, although some ads pay only for clicks on the ad.

Most sits pass the ad management to an ad network, like the largest, Google Adwords to place ads and collect payment.
