I would like to program my own online store and am unsure where to get started.

It would take too long to script your own online store as there are so many free scripts currently available created by people who have been doing it for years.
These days most of my online stores are Wordpress blogs using the paid e-commerce WP-eStore plugin. I can have a store ready to add products in half an hour from installing the Wordpress script and with theme, new header graphic and plugins ready to install.
