follow a lot of non-profit organizations on Twitter. If you follow them, they'll most likely follow you back.

Forget it.
Twitter is a scam.
Half of those things that you think are "following" you aren't even real people.
Twitter makes them up.
And if you're worried about twit followers for something that you think is "your" nonprofit, then I'll bet you don't have a properly constituted nonprofit corporation at all.
