If large enough, sites like alexa.com, compete.com, quantcast.com, ranking.com, trafficestimate.com may have traffic estimates based on a tiny sampling of internet users.
More often people compare the search result position for target keywords. There are browser plugins or tools like the free eval version of SEO PowerSuite that report search ranking for a list of keywords.

There are many tools to check the competitor traffic but Semrush is best tool. I am using it in my competitor analysis work. It provide a lot of information about your competitors like keywords, ppc keywords and budget, traffic, backlinks and many more thing. Try it.
