By "own" I mean this:

They don't really own the picture, you are giving them permission to use your image. (so, when you google someone's name and their facebook picture comes up, they can't be sued.) You still own the picture, but Facebook can use your image(s) for selling or marketing.
But when you delete the picture, facebook doesn't "own" it anymore.

Why?

Facebook allows you to use their program to communicate with friends. Their server hosts the picture. The picture you post takes up space.

They own the picture because once you post it on the site its like saying "okay, it's yours." If you don't want them to own it, don't post the picture. Smile
