You will find it easier to make a bit of revenue from selling ad space on a site getting decent traffic, you should expect to stick to it for months of quality content creation to develop decent search engine ranking and traffic. Yes, just start a WordPress site on a self hosted blog. But take care not to overly promote it and kind of force your visitors to buy it. Let the take the decision. You just promote your links.
