I don't know if I want my some of my friends' followers to know I have a twitter account.

If your Twitter is protected and one of your followers (Person A) mentions you...
Her follower (Person B) will not be able to read the message on their timeline. But, if they go to Person A's profile and timeline, they will see all twits made by Person A, including ones where she mentions you. If you go to Person A's twitter profile and timeline, you will also see twits where she mentions people you don't know.
Another way Person B can read the mention is when Person B is also following you.
If you opt not to have the mention read, you're better of using the Direct Message function.
