Google's Blogger.com has no paid upgrades like most others do, you can see a custom domain name obtained where you like. They seem tolerant of almost any type of content. Their proprietary blog engine is simpler than some, they host around 1.4 Billion pages.
WordPress.com exposed you to a slightly restricted version of the industry standard blog engine, some day when you use a paid host to guarantee you maintain control of your site, you can easily transition to standard wordpress. I hear that WordPress.com charges for being commercial or using a custom domain name. About 17% of the top 1 million sites use wordpress all the themes and plugins make it versatile.

I will go with Blogger. The free version is much better than Wordpress.com. You can get PR1 really fast.
