This is for a cartoon avatar or a photo avatar.Yahoo no longer provides avatars however you can create one from other free sites see the links below.If you are on wireless you must wait until you are on a computer.
Choose either a cartoon or a photo avatar you had saved to your pc.
Create a personal avatar below not a moving or large one, right click and save it to your computer pc.
Check the first one to make a cartoon of your own photo.

Close and reopen your browser or reboot. and your avatar should be showing If your avatar isn't showing try resizing it to make it smaller.

At this time you can not upload a picture from a mobile device, perhaps that will change in the future.
For now profile changes must be made from a computer.
Go here , http://profile.yahoo.com top center put the arrow on your avatar or !, click change picture.
From there you can upload a Picture from your computer or import a picture from facebook. When finished click submit on the next page. Sometimes it dose not automatically go back to,

Yahoo Answers did away with their Avatar Maker.
If you want a custom avatar go to one of these sites and make a custom avatar, save it to your computer and upload it as a picture.
