do they have to be people you know? Ive just made a twitter accoutn and Ive got one follower I feel like a loser :}

You don't have to thought I know its annoying when people spam yahoo with their accounts and stuff :l

Put a link to your twitter on ANY other site you're a member of.
Update regularly.
Comment on trending topics by using hashtags (for example #nowplaying)

if you want followers quickly, use the trending topics & put them in the messages you send out, people then might start to follow you..

The best way is to follow people with the same interests as you, and get involved in the conversation. Often if your tweeting about good/funny/interesting stuff. People just follow you to keep informed.
Following celebritys often help aswell and usually garner you a few more followers.
There is also software that will add followers based on your interest (Check source).
Of course the best way is to just be yourself, and get followers the natural way. Even if you get a tonne of followers through a bot or through following celebrity's. They more then likely wont even read your tweets.
