If it is your own site you can use a simple ahref link just like for a button.
Typically some more sophisticated code is used to track the number of impressions and clicks an ad receives, this data can be used for comparing performance of different designs.
There is as server software that allows this tracking to be done as well as inserting ads on sites with a single bit of code.
