I know the friends settings like custom but how do I get my profile to just say "married"?

When you are trying to change relationship status on Facebook as "married" just do one thing. Keep the Place empty(the name of the person with whom you got married) and save it. You will not be asked to input your partner's name forcedly. It is against the "Law of Facebook Community".
