I'm trying to help a friend out since I'm a computer nerd and she isn't. What kind of cheap or free SEO software do you recommend?

If you use WordPress, the Yoast plugin is great.
For link analysis, try Yahoo Site Explorer, which offers more accurate results than searching link:domain in Google.
For traffic analysis, you need to install Google Analytics.
To predict your future Google PageRank (don't obsess over it), use http://www.seomastering.com/pagerank-prediction.php
SEOMoz.org also has some great free SEO tools, but the really good ones you have to pay for. I think the starting rate is $89 per month, but I may be wrong.

Try to search for sites that post your backlink to stat websites!
