The answer is a little dependent on what you need. However, from my experience I have always found MediaTemple (http://www.mediatemple.net) to be excellent. The domain name registration process is super fast and is reasonably priced, and the hosting element is flexible and easy to use. The control panel for hosted sites makes changing settings extremely easy.

the best hosting company is the one that fits what you are doing
eg: if you have a new site and your needs are small, then some free hosts would be good. if your site is up to about 250 meg in size plus the database is similar, you MIGHT be happy with shared hosting at place like bluehos, fast domain, hostgator, but NOT godaddy
if your site is large and the database is equally large you should consider a co-hosted server
and if your site is like a yahoo, bing, amazon, then your own server farm is needed with staff to maintain it

I think there are many good hosting companys, anyway the best right now for me is en.zthaepymes.com, other good options are inmotionhosting.com and greengeeks.com
