I was recently added to a whatsapp group and though the numbers of the people in the group were not saved in my phone, I could still see their display name along with their numbers when they sent out a message to the group. Then I temporarily saved their contacts to my phone, and later deleted them. But now I can't see their display name in the messages, just the numbers. How do I go back to the way it was????

This happens because you saved the numbers from whatsapp and the whatsapp think that you got the number saved( that is the names are displayed since numbers are saved) so whatsapp doesn't show the name.
But since you deleted the numbers therefore they are not coming.

give names to that number and save it as contacts in ur phone. Now open whats app u can see the names
