Do apple tv and roku xds need a direct internet connection? - skinnykite888 - 04-27-2014 10:57 PM

My only internet connection is a wireless air card (Verizon 4G LTE). Is there any way I can make use of apple tv or roku xds when this is my only internet connection?

I have a Roku HD-XR and it will work either via a wired Ethernet connection or WIFI (802.11b/g/n). If you have the ability to share your connection, then it is possible to use the Roku on this connection, if the bandwidth is high enough. Microsoft has information on it's website on how to set up internet connection sharing. If the Verizon 4G LTE is capable of broadcasting a WIFI signal this will be even easier, but odds are that it doesn't do this presently, and there is not 4G MIFI device yet. Be aware that your internet provider may have a bandwidth cap and/or charge you an exorbitant fee if you go over your cap. Verizon offers the following plans: 5 GB for $50 per month, or 10 GB for $80 per month, both with $10/GB overage ‘fees’. It is not hard at all to blow your entire months bandwidth in a day. In contrast, Comcast has a bandwidth cap of 250 GB/month. In operation the Roku needs 2.2 Mbps to operate. You are most likely going to have a bandwidth of 100 Mbps down, so this should be no problem. Seriously though, I think the Roku will work much better through a regular broadband connection. I wouldn't try the above unless I had no other choice. Even if it works, you're going to run into bandwidth issues which could either be costly, maddening or both.

Good luck!
