You need to manually set both machines into the same subnet and give each an individual IP address within that subnet. You MUST only use private IP address ranges for that.The both need to be set to the same workgroup name. For the connection to be useful you would need to at least set up a shared folder or printer on one of the machines. If the connection does not work with a normal CAT5E or higher patch cable you may need to get a cross-over cable. There are still a few machines with non polarity sensing network cards around.
If you have a router for Internet connection you do NOT need to connect them, as they will already be aout-configured with IP properties and are already networked, so all you would need to do is set up the sharing.
