I remember using things like gopher to find papers. The first web browser I used, Mozilla, didn't come until '93 I think. FTP and e-mail were the primary uses for several years there.

1994. I remember a brand new thing called a browser, which was netscape.

In the late 1980's , free aol floppy disks in the mail every few weeks.

1997 or 1998, in college. I remember I had AOL(Hell), and received the infamous "Goodbye" if I did not surf from thier browser in a set time. But I do remeber using a modem to dial up BBS sites as long as 1994. I also connected to a friend directly via modem to exchange files on a wopping 9800 baud. But Internet like today around 1998.
