but I have tried to register a .com website but it doesn't work

You can't get a free .com. nor any of the other respectable names. Those few free TLDs available are not worth your time, Google recently removed all 11 Million .co.cc names from their index after identifying a high incidence of illegal activities involving these easy to get, poorly managed names.
You can find coupon code offers for mew domain names, you can find .info registrars offering them for $2 for the first year.
