Speaking during an online Q&A with fans after the series 3 finale, Steven Moffat and Mark Gatiss admitted it all comes down to Benedict Cumberbatch and Martin Freeman.

It hasn't been announced but the earliest its been rumored to air is around this Christmas or early next year.
Hopefully it won't be 2016, the Season 2 cliffhanger was bad enough.
