Because they're very popular with a lot of other people. They've both been around for a while and have been good at adapting their musical style as the pop and r&b genres have adapted which has contributed to their long-standing popularity.

No earthly clue. I'm not a pop fan myself, but others have said "I can totally relate". That line would be said by a 13 year old girl about One Direction who never has actually been on a date before. I prefer, personally, Les Miserables and people who can sing.

I don't underswtand why shakira is the most liked singer she sings horrible , but Rihanna has pretty good music that's popular to people.
