if he says hi back just reply with a "whats up?" you'd be surprised and where a conversation can go from there

say whats up and then ask him about his day?
compliment him and then ask more about his school or work
what he studies
where he works
if he likes it blah blah and then talk a bit more about yourself... all will be good

Just ask him what he's been up to that day, or what he's going to be doing the next day or at the weekend. Ask him if he watched something you recently enjoyed on tv. Tell him you like his profile or cover picture. Tell him something funny that happened to you recently - e.g. you'll never guess what happened to me earlier...
Make sure you tank him for any compliments he might pay you and just enjoy your first conversation. Good luck
