There're several ways to do this, one can be by following other people and hope they will follow back, another is twitting with the trend words you're given in the trend list, this usually catches the attention of people if your tweets are interesting or funny.

Once in a while, Twitter will send around a "more followers" message. Fill that out and you'll have 6 more followers on twitter.

I find Twitter trains a great way to get followers. First, you sign into the website, follow people, then you get added to the train. Once you're on the train, people that sign up then have to follow you. It's all people looking to get more followers, so it works well. Give this one a try: http://targetfollowers.com
