It was banned because anti-communists in China were using Facebook as a mean of communication to schedule protests, some in which resulted in riots. As of August 2013, Facebook has been unblocked in a new free trade zone (approx 17 sqaure miles) of Shanghai, China. Only those who reside or work in the free trade zone may use Facebook.

Because China Is still , well like half communism. They've got rid of some communism but its a lot still there. China wants to control their people. Its not as bad as some communist countries though.

China is still a totalitarian state despite their state sponsored "capitalism". The government there can do anything they want to.

main reason because the PRC want to censor materials and they don't want a platform where people around world can communicate
