Google takes into consideration redirections to the extent they are legit, otherwise its slams 301 abusers—as follows. If you do implement redirections for a mere SEO reason, Google will catch you one day in your attempt to manipulate its page rank, and then ban your sites. A whistleblower or naughty competitor may also report you—which is not rare. But if you really have a forum under mysite.com/forum and want to move it to its own domain mysitefourm.com, then redirection is legitimate. Google even provides you with guidelines available at http://www.google.com/support/webmasters/bin/answer.py?hl=en&answer=83105 that help you complete the moving as smoothly as possible. Personally, I would not jeopardize what it may take me some time to build, just to get results faster.
