Backlinks are those links that are found on other websites that link back to yours. Backlinks are a way of determining your website's popularity. Meaning if there are a lot of quality websites linking to yours, then chances are that your website has some significance.
Backlink optimization is one of the harder aspects of SEO since you do not have direct control over it. Unless your website is already popular, you are going to have give people a reason to link to yours. Either you specifically request a link be put on their site or you have a certain tool/product that is worth linking to on their own accord. Once other sites begin linking to yours, it could take 6 to 8 months before a search engine like Google will recognize it.
