What does this sign mean # on twitter? - ChicandMeek - 10-01-2012 03:18 AM

I know it is a hash tag but what the heck do you use it for and when is the right time to use it? Do you use it all the time when you send a tweet? Can you give me an example and explain it.
OH and what is better twitter or tumblr? Is tumblr that fun anyways?

hashtags: The # symbol, called a hashtag, is used to mark keywords or topics in a Tweet. It was created organically by Twitter users as a way to categorize messages.

this explains everything you need to know about it:

hash tags are typically meant for catorgorizing your tweets with trending topics, ie. topics that are commonly tweeted about.

For Example: If you were at Disney World you could tweet something like:

oh my god this lady in front of me will not shut up #disneyworld #annoying

or

Miranda Cosgrove is my favorite person in the world #iCarly

so you use hash tags to furthermore describe your tweet without it actually being in the message itself. although now a days on twitter hash tags are overused. you don't HAVE to use them every tweet but people do most of the time.

I hope this helped

and also, Tumblr is a lot more fun but that is just my personal preference.
