When the product is first introduced, it costs a premium as you need to recover investment (example a new model car).

As time passes, your investment is down and you can pass on discounts and at the same time make more money by selling more number of units.

As the product becomes matured, you can reduce marketing costs (advetising, number of salesmen etc) and still make money.
