I know an internet connection is to play the first one but is it needed for Mass Effect 2?

Depends. If you haven't connected to Cerberus and downloaded any of the DLC then you're fine to play offline. If you HAVE downloaded any of the DLC then yes, an internet connection is required otherwise there can be issues with saving amongst other things
