I have no connection to an internet now at my apartment, i have heard that if i get a wireless connection router or something, i could pick up Road Runner signals from other people who have an internet connection in my apartment. I know i know, its stealing, but i'm just wondering

Yes, but only if they are not encrypted, and you can pick up enough signal

No, close, but not a router. If you have a wireless network card that picks up on the frequencies of the other routers that send off signals from other people's Internet connection, then you could. But, there is a problem, if you live in a big city, most people have security encryptions on their network connections, so that could cause a problem. But, to answer the question, you need a network card, not a router, they are two completely different things.

Yes the wireless transceiver in your laptop/pc can pickup networks that are nearby. But you can access the internet only if those are not password protected. If you take your laptop to library or airports you can access the internet via the public wireless routers.

No, you don't need a router. You only need a wireless connection (NIC or built in) on your PC. They need to have the router or wireless access point and they must be running it without any security on it.
You can piggy back, but you won't have an account with their ISP.

this is a real gray area that many people tend to ignore for the most part. I would not call it stealing because there IS ways of encrypting wireless networks. If the owner chooses not to encrypt, then oh well. just be 100% sure that someone in your apartment has a wireless router, all YOU need is a computer (laptop or desktop) that is capable of connecting to a wireless network via a wireless adapter (usb or internal)

It would be an adapter, not the router and only if the other person or persons you would be pigging-backing on, don't have their connection encrypted.

if you know its stealing then why are you just wondering?
anyway, since youre wondering... you wouldnt need a router, the router is the device that creates the signal. instead you would only need a wireless card on your desktop or laptop computer

that site is pretty useful in explaining what you need to know. if you want to steal other ppls internet that is not encrypted, just get a wireless card. if you want your own legit internet, get the card AND a router, just make sure to encrypt your connection.
