submit the names yourself. That still doesn't generate traffic and rankings. You're just another domain out of millions. Nothing special there.

Lots of work. You can submit the URLs manually, post backlinks to your websites on other sites, write articles based around keywords you wish to rank for. etc
The list of things you can do is endless, how well you rank in the search engines will depend on a number of factors such as keyword competition, website content etc.
http://www.blackhatworld.com/ gives some good advice on SEO (both legit and some underhand tactics) I would stick to legitimate methods though if you want your web sites to rank well and not be penalised.

You have create blog and articles about your domain and then submit the link on different directories and bookmarking sites. You can also make page on different social media sites like Facebook, Twitter, LinkedIn etc and advertise on these sites. It will give you backlinks and bring traffic on your blog and articles which will increase your ranking and reputation in search engines and this way your site will get known.
