Ordering internet online, help!? - kyle - 04-28-2014 06:29 PM

I want to order ADSL internet online but I'm not sure how it works? Do they post the connection or how does it work?

I am going to assume your in the UK... What they do is take your land line number and do a line test together with your address, Once they determine what speed they can offer you, and if you agree to it you take out the contract... All they send you is the router if they provide one for free which all them do... Once you receive the router, You be told when to connect it, Once your told, Most likely by text message, you connect the router to your phone socket, Once the green light or ADSL light as become solid and stable you have an internet connection...

Your telephone line has to be 'Provisioned' - the line in the exchange re-connected via the ADSL equipment in the exchange, the exchange equivalent of an ADSL modem & filter to provide the signal.

You normally get the ADSL Modem/Router box in the post, with info on configuring it & how / where to fit ADSL filters.

Once the exchange work is done and your account is 'live' the box will see the ADSL signal on the phone line & you will have internet access.

There is usually a light labelled ADSL on the box, to show the signal is present.

If you get an FTTC service (eg. BT Infinity), generally an engineer will visit to install it & fit a 'whole house' filter to your phone master socket.

You order it via an internet service provider (ISP) (and there may be options as to what router you want)
They will require your telephone number and will arrange for ADSL to be available on your telephone line (if you aint got a telephone landline then you cant have ADSL)

They will then send you a package of all the stuff you require with instructions on how to set it up (these will probably be on a cd)
