like giving real DOB.
I just changed my DOB to real one on every profile, viz facebook, yahoo, gmail,etc.
Previously, over the concerns of data leaks, whether intentional or accidental, I didn't share the real one.
I am legitimizing mainly because I want the visa processes to go smoothly.
I have no idea about visa forms of countries, and don't know how can they check our profiles if don't provide the links.

Yes, it's safe. You don't make up things for a profile. There's information you can leave out in some instances, but don't lie
