is it worth getting a marketing company to do seo for my business to become number one on google places or is it simple to do it myself?

It is a relatively simple process, though I understand the local SEO game has changed, the search ranking of your own company site that the places page links to apparently is a significant factor is places page ranking. At any rate you should be involved in getting authentic customer reviews that will stick.
There are services like the often recommended Localeze.com as well as LocalCitations.com, getlisted.org that can help get citations on various online business directories.
