My internet connection has been ridiculously slow the past few days, about the same time my antivirus software expired. Could they be related?

The most common reason behind your computer running slow is the presence of virus in it. If your anti-virus has expired then your PC is vulnerable to virus, spyware and malware attack. The speed is bound to go down once it is infected with all these harmful elements.
The nature of the connection, to a large extent affects the speed of the Internet. If you are using a dial-up connection then, your Internet will automatically go slow despite trying every means to boost up the speed. If the distance of the service station is far from your residence or if subscribers load is very high then your Internet will perform poorly.

I heard that could be related bc bogus anti vir co.s mess up your pc when they expire, so you,l re-up at a fee.
in Win7 use Microsoft Security Essentials, in 8, Windows Defender.
MSE is anti vir + firewall + anti adware.
free and included. Look at Windows Update daily.
