in this age of the internet, when people communicate via e-mail, instant text messaging, tweeting, facebook, and other social media, is the concept of jurisdiction losing its meaning?

No it is not. The fact that people communicate via e-mail, instant text messaging, tweeting, facebook, and other social media, does not diminish the concept that there should be limits as to where an action can be brought. Besides, laws vary from state to state, so there is a need to know beforehand under which rules we play by.
