i am thinkin of buyin one but do you have to connect it up to the internet to be able to play or can i play it without the internet connection

You can play without the internet. The Xbox Live service just allows you to play games with other people, download updates, interact with people on Xbox live. If you don't have it connected to the internet you can still play the games you buy. Just make sure you don't buy a game that requires an internet connection in order to play.
