Cookies simply store data from a website you visit onto your machine. Like facebook remembering your username and password. Thats to do with cookies.
Cookies CAN'T Store viruses or malware but you can get people creating cookies to store your personal data.

cookies are used to store variables in web application like , purchase order name, username , any numeric ;calculation etc , at other hand sessions are used to store user session in web site , it also mapped d with time stamping , cookies cab be viewed if you check web browser cookie setting , Browser URL consist of query string and data , the data is stored in cookies for further processing , cookies are in key :id pair example: name:"abc",or id:1234 etc,social networking sites or any other sites who implement user management system uses session mechanism , to performed operation with cookies , cookies can be stored on user computer or server , FB uses session based management to store cookies with added security layers and encryption
