I clicked on the icon and clicked uninstall....that didn't work. I clicked in the control panel, add/remove programs....and that didn't work. How can I get rid of it?

Right click the bar on top and it'll have the toolbar on the list, just unclick it. Let me know if it works or not.

Type 'about:support' into Firefox address bar and click the 'Reset Firefox...' button found at upper right area

There are 3 steps for you to learn and fully uninstall AVG toolbar.
Recently, I installed AVG toolbar by mistake. And I tried to delete it but I failed due to it is not available to remove AVG toolbar through "Add or Remove Program" in Windows XP. And the error messages frequently show up and don't allow me to get rid of AVG. In order to delete it, I have searched and tried many uninstall tips to totally remove AVG toolbar from my computer. And I found the most effective one is below:
1. Quit AVG and all related to its processes.
2. Download and use AVG toolbar removal tool like Perfect Uninstaller
3. Find AVG toolbar and click "Uninstall" button to delete the unwanted program from your PC.
After you finish the onscreen processes, you will find AVG toolbar has been fully removed from your PC.
