Aren't they called 'newscrawlers"? So if I wanted news articles about NASA's activities relative to the moon, I could use keywords "NASA" and "moon" and get news with those topics included.

This is a simplified example, but serves.

People most commonly use Google Alerts http://www.google.com/alerts
to watch for certain phases popping up on the web, often this sill be businesses wanting to know of any mentions of their business name.
