Music theory question: Modulation? - TheAsker - 04-28-2014 09:18 PM

I am in the key of Ab Major. My pivot chord is a Gr6 in Ab and then V7 in the new key. I cannot tell which key to modulate to...help?

so your gr+6 (im assuming thats your pivot chord) in Ab is Fb - Ab - Cb - D. and then you go to V7 in the new key. Since that Gr6 in Ab is also enharmonic equivalent to E7, you can assume your new key is A major. Fb - Ab - Cb - D is the same as E - G# - B - D which is E7 of A, allowing you to modulate to A. I think that is what it is.

I concur the key of A.
Essentially an E7 chord has it's domanant tendency toward the key of A.
The cause of the confusion is the theroretically correct spelling of the Gr6: We rarely run into the inharmonic equivilent of E spelled as F b. So it is a challenging issue.
