There is one friend I know who gets many likes(almost 1/2 the number of his followers) on Instagram. Other friends have more followers than him(sometimes 1000) but get less or equivalent likes. Is it because he is rather good looking or he is popular in school(idk if he is)?

No. Those followers aren't real followers, they are just spammers. Avoid them.
