I don't want to set my account to private but I wondered can someone I know find me on twitter using my email address? Can I block them from finding me in the first place? Thanks

To block others :
Log in to your Twitter account.
Go to the profile page of the person you wish to block.
Click the gear icon on their profile page. This brings up a drop-down actions menu.
Select Block from the options listed.
