I was recently looking into this for my website and found the Firefox plug 'NoDoFollow' to be very helpful. Download this plug; when activated, it highlights no follow links in red and do follow in blue.
From here Google your competition using the following query:
links: http://www.yourcompetition.com
This will show you what links are pointing to your competitors website. Go to each page and explore which ones have do follow links, then sign up for those websites/citation sites/forum sites, and begin posting your links.
