The keyword planner is what has replaced the Google keyword tool - it might take some time to get used to the new interface, but all the data is still there.
External good keyword tools are:
Keyword Snooper
Long Tail Pro
Market Samurai
Keyword Spy
Wordtracker
UberSuggest
All of them except UberSuggest are paid, but well worth it IMO. You just need to check them out and choose the one that you need based on their features, price, etc.
