In other words, does highlighting a post override the "only me" privacy setting for that post?
Also, 'highlighting' a post seems to make a post show more prominently on a person's 'timeline' in case someone out there doesn't know what I'm talking about.

Actually whenever you do anything, a notification is send to all your friends. So it is happening.

Yes, your friend will read it at that time.
