Yes. A lot of features are opened up with internet.

Is the internet a MUST? I would say no. If you want to play games and movies then you should be alright. You will need to create a new account so if you have any other Playstation device they will not be connected. Also, if you have any cross-play games on a PS3 or Vita then you will not be able to play them.
However, it is possible to play games and watch blu-ray and dvd movies on a PS4 without the internet.

No , but you have to have an internet connection and download the system software update f you want to add features like DVD play so you still need access somehow , a pc and a flash drive to keep the console updated

No, but you would need to download a firmware update from somewhere and put it on a flash drive.
