This can't be an OR question as both market timing and perseverance were interrelated, with both affecting the other.

I think what you are saying is which led to Red Bull's success more, market timing or marketing perseverance.

To which I would say market timing had the most influence because their was no legitimate energy drink available at that time. Well, There was Jolt cola but it was sugar and caffeine. But everyone knows simple carbohydrates are a bad source of long lasting energy. Red Bull's ingredients, b vitamins, taurine I think?, guarana maybe? They are ingredients that were new in the form of a drink and they were not recognized as being simple carbs.

Put simply. I think Red Bull saw their opportunity, the market timing aspect, and grew more successful through intelligent and widespread marketing.

Had Rockstar or Monster or NOS or Full Throttle etc. done the same they would be the leading selling energy drink regardless of the ingredients.

As for marketing success, I think Monster's marketing ability has been equally successful if not more successful than Red Bull's. Monster now rivals the company that had the advantage of market timing (Red Bull).

Both. They have slick marketing and they do it at the right time (for them) and do a lot of it (perseverance). Timing is more critical though!
