So I got tired of FB and shut down my account...some people took that as an insult and now won't talk to me in the real world.
Should I keep my account open/active to satisfy the crybabies?

you answered your own question...no.
crybabies = not friends if you look at them that way.
friends who cannot exist out of FB = not real friends.

That's messed up. Any friend who does that is a complete dick therefore you shouldn't be friends with them... or they're joking.
They're stupid. Keep your account deactivated.

No, It's Your Decision To Make, Don't Be Pushed Into It By Them. Obviously Aswell, How Good Of Friends Can These People Be If They Don't Strive For What You Want. They Should Accept What You Have Done And Worry About Their Own Facebook Accounts, Not Yours

I think not, all will be in your list but no one can see you on facebook because your account is deactivated. and when you activate it then everything goes to normal like before.
